Abstract: The presented report describes a new compact plate recuperator in modular design. The matrix of this heat exchanger is formed by to and fro folding of a herringbone corrugated metal sheet and it is made tight by welding. The dependences of heat transfer and pressure loss on the geometry of the corrugation are determined by experiments and by information in the literature. Reductions of the efficiency caused by internal heat conduction and unequal flowrate distributionsare computed and the pressure losses of the headers are estimated. For the main parameters sensitivity analyses are performed to show the influence on the compactnes of the matrix and the whole heat exchanger. Three design studies for large compact heat exchangers up to 1300 MW heat transfer power for chemical and nuclear plants demonstrate that volume and weight are reduced by half compared to conventional tubular heat exchangers.
